Frequently asked questions about security cameras
How long is footage kept?
Thirty days at most. That is also the legal ceiling: Belgian camera law allows one month, with an exception up to three months for specific high-risk locations such as airports. After that, footage is deleted automatically unless it serves as evidence following an incident.
What am I allowed to film?
The Belgian coordinated camera law of 21 March 2007 sets the rules. In short: you film your own premises, not the public road and not your neighbours’ property. If a strip of pavement is unavoidable, for instance at a front door opening straight onto the street, you limit it through camera angle or privacy zones. Every camera must be registered before use via aangiftecamera.be, you display the statutory pictogram, and you keep a register of image processing. Filming places where people undress or use the toilet is never permitted, and neither is filming covertly. The Belgian Data Protection Authority publishes the full rules.
What does a four-camera system cost?
That depends mostly on the type of camera: a fixed camera on a façade is a different proposition from one that has to zoom or read number plates. We first work out what you need to see, then agree a total price. No subscription is added, because the footage stays on your own console.
